Utahraptor

From Turok Wiki

Contents

[edit] Introduction

The Utahraptor is the single most common nonhuman enemy in Turok. Usually found in groups, they will attack without thought to anything that appears hostile or edible. They can easily be attracted to other enemies, including soldiers, and other dinosaurs with the flare attachment of the shotgun. The Utahraptor is capable of leaping several yards, and will knock down its' prey to kill it. The Raptor comes in 5 different colours, Orange, Brown, Green, White and Blue, three of which are similar with the last two being slightly different.

[edit] History

Utahraptor (meaning "Utah's predator") is the largest known member of the theropod dinosaur family Dromaeosauridae, and dates from the upper Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous period (132-119 million years ago)

[edit] Variants

[edit] Brown, Green, Blue Raptor's:

These are the most common raptors, Brown being the most common and Blue being the least.

Brown Raptor's are coloured with brown scaled skin with pale orange overtones and black stripes across the spine to simulate dirt or dried mud mixed in with grass. They frequently appear during the beginning parts of the game and are the weakest form of Raptor. They are also the least aggressive in that they resort more to ambush tactic's and hit and run manoeuvres than direct combat..

Green Raptor's are coloured in a deep dark green mottled skin with very pale black strips and blend in well with the surrounding environment. They are uncommon in the early part's of the game, they slowly replace Brown Raptor's as the game progresses. They are in the middle between Brown and Blue Raptor's and frequently vary their tactic's from ambush to direct assault.

Blue Raptor's are coloured Dark bluish/black with easy to spot stripes down the side, they are often mistaken for Brown Raptor's due to their skin being very similar to brown in dark environments. They are by far the toughest of Raptor's, second only to the Albino. They are the most aggressive and frequently attack in direct assault rather than ambush and are only really seen in the late stages of the game, in which for the most part, Green Raptor's are more common with Blue being the least and Brown being almost non-existent. They are tough enough to take almost an entire magazine of an SMG or about 4-5 shotgun blasts at short range.

[edit] Spitter's:

These are Brown Coloured Raptors and are often mistaken for normal browns later in the game. They seem to be more mutated in look, noticeable by fleks of skin seemingly "hanging off" and spikes jutting out from the back of their spines. They also have a venom sack on their neck which is highly visible at close range. Unlike regular Raptor's, Spitter's are special in that they have a highly damaging ranged spit attack, while the spit is slow moving and easy to dodge it can kill you with 2-3 hits if it connects. Spitter's ready themselves in a stance similar to a cannon, their tails stretch backward, head low and the back is arched almost like it's ready to leap only to spit a green glob of mucus at the target. They are generally slower than regular Raptor's and some appear larger too, their increased bulk equates to more damage when they ram or charge a target.

[edit] Albino's:

White versions of the standard Raptor with pale white stripes and almost gray/white skin, most commonly appearing in caves and at night. They also have glowing white eye's which are easy to spot in these dark areas. Albino's are by far the toughest sub species of Raptor, taking several shots from most weapons, including a magazine or two of a sub-machine gun or 5 to 6 rounds from a shotgun. Some are even known to surviving a blast from a Frag Grenade on the harder difficulties. Luckily they only appear in select area's, most notably in the cave's just after the level, Death Valley.

[edit] Attack Pattern

Depending on the type Turok is faced with they do various tactic's against him. Lower level Brown Raptor's only attack directly in the presence of other Raptor's or Mini Raptor's, alone or in pair's they resort to hit and run and frequently attempt to ambush Turok in certain areas.

Green Raptor's are likely to attack in various forms, from ambushes to direct attacks.

Blue raptor's favour direct assault, instead of ambushes, but being the least common they are more inclined to attack Turok individually rather than in Groups.

Spitter's usually travel in pairs, one would normally attack with it's spit attack while the other attacks at close range, the one that spits acting as a distraction. If one spitter is found, the other is usually close by.

Albino's, favouring dark places attack in the concealment of darkness and frequently ambush the player from behind, but also attack most frequently from the front in pairs or groups to overwhelm their armed prey.

[edit] Countermeasures

Against a Utahraptor, Turok can do a variety of things. The first and easiest way to kill one is to use the knife, which, when close enough, can deliver a one hit kill.

The second and most direct approach is to take it down with a hailstorm of gunfire. The most recommended is the SMG at medium range and the Shotgun for up close. Grenade's and Tek Arrow's are much more useful for groups of Raptor's.

The third method is to attach a flare to the said raptor, and wait for others to begin attacking it. Using this method, the Utahraptor won't last long.

The fourth and goriest way to down a Utahraptor is to use the Stick Bomb gun, and attach a bomb to it. Make sure you are far enough away, and detonate it. BOOM, dino bits everywhere. Also you can use tek arrows to achieve the same effect. The Sticky grenade fragment mine, secondary fire is a great way of covering an area from a likely raptor surprise attack.

[edit] Trivia:

  • On the Turok.com homepage, the Utahraptors and other raptors are listed differently, probably to conform to the community's mind of what a raptor is. The Utahraptor is listed as a Velociraptor but it's size in-game is more like that of a Utahraptor since Velociraptors are about 3 feet tall.
  • The Spitter was once considered a Juvenile Spinosaurus due to the appearance of the spikes on the back, when really it was just a mutated variety of Raptor.
