The Tyrannosaurus rex, also known as T. rex, is a large theropod dinosaur that appears throughout the Turok franchise.

In the video games, the T. rex appears mostly as a boss, and in some cases, it appears as a mini-boss.

Acclaim VariantsEdit

Turok: Dinosaur HunterEdit

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter had only one T. rex: a massive, green T. rex by the name of Thunder. This Tyrannosaurus acts as a boss battle and features multiple attacks, such as a laser eye and flame breath, which is forcefully ejected out of its mouth.

This T. rex is very large, being just over the average size of a real-life Tyrannosaurus rex.

Turok: EvolutionEdit

Turok: Evolution possesses two Tyrannosaurus. One is encountered early on, in the third chapter, during "Summit Battle." It is feral and is seen devouring a Brachiosaurus.

In terms of health, it is relatively weak and is realistic in terms of appearance and performance. Unlike Dinosaur Hunter, this T. rex is a deeper brown color.

The second T. rex is under the command of Tobias Bruckner. It is armed with Miniguns, Flamethrowers, and armor, which can cause the player severe physical harm. It also acts as a boss battle, has immense health, and is an oblique reference to Thunder, who acted in a strikingly similar manner to this Tyrannosaurus.

In the Game Boy Advance port of Turok: Evolution, there is a tan, tiger-striped T. rex encountered twice, once in the canyon and the other in the last level once the Lord Tyrannus hologram is defeated. This T. rex has a cannon on its back manned by Tobias Bruckner, the latter of which will stop at nothing to prevent Tal'Set and Djunn from progressing further.

Turok

Propaganda Games had a few variants of the Tyrannosaurus species spread out over their games. Turok had a solitary T. rex in the game that went by the name of "Mama Scarface," with juvenile Tyrannosaurus rexes being present in one level.

Mama ScarfaceEdit

Pre-releaseEdit

In many pre-release alpha shots, there are screenshots of Mama Scarface prior to a major, and obvious, redesign. In this alpha stage, the T. rex was way larger and had a much more angular appearance, especially around the skull and jaw, which were not nearly as rounded as they are in the current release.

Mama Scarface in this stage also possessed black eyes, with yellow irises, and was shown to be very strong and durable, with her hunting a Dilophosaurus despite having massive holes blown out of her side and neck. Unlike the final release, Scarface could actually stand with her head higher than her tail, giving her even more height against adversaries.

Final releaseEdit

In the final release, Mama Scarface remains the primary Tyrannosaurus antagonist in the game. She is still massive and acts as a boss enemy and crowd clearer, as she is encountered multiple times, coming after Mendel-Gruman forces while mainly steering clear of Joseph Turok and his Whiskey Company allies.

She is very large in size and sports a dark brown color, with a massive, rounded skull and a severe gash wound on her face, which resulted in the loss of her right eye. Said wound is constantly bleeding in game and is depicted with a massive scar, hence the creature's name.

The T. rex can appear as both a boss battle, and as a rogue NPC during certain levels. The instances of her acting as a simple NPC occur during the events of "The Lost Land," and "End of the Road." In the first level, she will act in a scripted manner, and eat the remaining MG soldiers that Turok and Slade face. She will make no attempt to attack the two, and leaves shortly after.

During the events of the latter level, she will roam around a small area freely, eating MG soldiers while Whiskey Company watches on. After a short amount of time, she will leave, allowing safe passage into the base's exterior levels.

She is fought as a boss on two occasions: one during "Mother Superior" and another during "An Eye for an Eye." During the first encounter, she is enraged at the slaying of her offspring and attacks Turok relentlessly, going as far as to slam her head into crevices she can barely fit into just to try to reach him. Once Turok downs her, he attempts to kill her, but is shaken off and knocked out until nighttime.

In the latter encounter, she, still angered, attacks Turok again. This time, however, once she goes down, Turok primes and slams a grenade into her skull, causing it to explode after a few moments, resulting in her death.

Juvenile Tyrannosaurus rexEdit

This dinosaur species is not seen until "Mother Superior," where they are depicted as crowding around in a pack in their mother's nest. They look very similar to their mother; however, they can come in multiple colors and variants, ranging from brown, to green, to even blue.

After the brief appearance in the nest, these dinosaurs never make another appearance.

Overview

Homeworld:

Terraformed planet

Era:

Cretaceous

Distinctions:

Jungle T. rex: Red coloration, with a spine much akin to a Spinosaurus on its neck.
Desert T. rex: Brown coloration, with rocky armour covering its hide. Scar on its left eye, much like Mama Scarface.
Swamp T. rex: Green in coloration, with a small dorsal ridge, like the Jungle T. rex. Had the largest size in terms of T. rexes.

Other Nomenclature:

T. rex

Turok 2

While most T. rexes in the franchise have been the same general species, Turok 2 was going to incorporate variants based on their environment.

Jungle Tyrannosaurus rexEdit

The Jungle T. rex variant would have appeared in the jungles of Turok 2. This T. rex was a reddish-orange color with a ridge of large and sharp spines going down its spinal ridge, akin to the Spinosaurus. However, said spines only went down the neck, rather than the entire spine.

This dinosaur was one of the two to be seen in combat, the other being the Desert T. rex. In this case, the Jungle T. rex is seen in combat with Turok, as the latter uses a Laser Cannon against it.

Desert Tyrannosaurus rexEdit

The Desert T. rex was a variant of dinosaur that is found in the desert. The T. rex would have hard stone-like scales on its body. Turok 2's lone, fourteen second trailer depicted a massive Desert T. rex storming around an MG complex.

Any attempt to fire at it failed, as the T. rex's hide, which is essentially stone, deflected the rounds, giving the dinosaur the opportunity to kill and maim many MG Soldiers, before Turok arrived.

This T. rex's design seems to have been altered in development, as the trailer shows the T. rex as having a skull that is elongated, much like a Tyrannosaurus in reality. However, later renders and concept art shows a stubbier face and smaller, sharper teeth, which also grow in number compared to the earlier design, where there were fewer, but larger, teeth, much like a real-life Tyrannosaur.

Swamp Tyrannosaurus rexEdit

The Swamp T. rex would have appeared in the swamps of Turok 2. It is the third and last variant that would have been seen. It is large, very bulky and muscular, and it, like the Jungle T. rex, had a ridge of spines going down its spinal area.

This T. rex's spines were more toned down and rounded compared to the Jungle variant; however, unlike the others, the row of spines went all the way down its back instead of ending at the neck. Its skin is a green-ish color with some areas being tinted a black color.

This variant's concept art suggests its size to be larger than Mama Scarface or the other Turok 2 variants, as it easily dwarfs Turok in size.

Comic VariantsEdit

Tyrannosaurus appears in every incarnation of the Turok comic book series.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (2014)Edit

Tyrannosaurus rex features heavily in the Dynamite Turok: Dinosaur Hunter series. It is notable as the first incarnation T. rex in the Turok franchise to be depicted with feathers, as per current scientific understanding of the animal.

In Dynamite's Turok: Dinosaur Hunter comic series, the animal bares a bright blue coloration with vibrant red-orange markings on its dorsal surface. The animal has a crest of large, orange display feathers on the back of its neck.

The anatomy of the Tyrannosaurus in the books is extremely inconsistent panel-to-panel as almost every appearance of the animal is traced over images from the internet. Because of this, the anatomy ranges from very bad to very good based on the image being traced.

Tyrannosaurus plays an important role in the first arc of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. The Crusaders refer to the animal as a Dragon.

In Issue 2, Tyrannosaurus appears at the end of the issue in chains aboard the Crusader's ship.

In Issue 3, the Crusaders release the Tyrannosaurus with the intention of having it kill Turok, Andar, and the tribe. The dinosaur very nearly devours Turok and Marion before they are saved by Turok's tamed Red Drake. Turok then rides the smaller theropod and leads the T. rex back to the Crusader's camp.

In Issue 4, the Tyrannosaurus destroys the Crusader's beach camp and chases the surviving crusaders through the forest and up to the caves in which Andar, Marion, and the tribe are hiding. The carnivore then waits outside of the caves, trapping the Crusaders and natives inside together. Marion's father attempts to appease the beast by feeding it a dog, but Turok arrives and saves the animal.

After killing him in a sword duel, Turok feeds the body of Marion's father to the Tyrannosaur, but it is not enough to satisfy the beast. Turok then tempts the animal into chasing him. He leads it to the beach, wherein he commandeers a rowboat to lead the animal into the water. Here the Tyrannosaurus is killed and devoured by a trio of Thalattoarchon, ending this Tyrannosaurus specimen and the first arc of the comic.

TriviaEdit

  • In the comics, the T. rex appears with three fingers in several issues. This is most likely due to artistic license.
