The Tyrannosaurus rex, also known as T. rex, is a large theropod dinosaur that appears throughout the Turok franchise.

In the video games, the T. rex appears mostly as a boss, and in some cases, it appears as a mini-boss.

Appearance[]

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter[]

This T. rex is very large, being just over the average size of a real-life Tyrannosaurus rex. It features some spikes on its back, as well as multiple pieces of armor on its body.

Turok: Evolution[]

Evolution's Tyrannosauruses vary in appearance. The first T. rex that is encountered is a deeper brown coloration. Unlike Dinosaur Hunter's Thunder, it does not wear any sort of weaponry, nor does it have any robotic parts attached to it.

The second T. rex that is encountered is significantly larger than the first one. It has an orange-ish brown color. Unlike the highlands T. rex, this one is armed with weapons and is adorned with battle armor, including two large, head-mounted horns.

Turok

Turok had a solitary T. rex that went by the name of "Mama Scarface," with her offspring being present in one level.

2006 build[]

In a few pre-release screenshots for Turok shown during 2006, there are depictions of Mama Scarface prior to a major redesign. In this pre-release stage, the T. rex was larger and had a much more stylized aesthetic, more prominently around the skull and jaw, which were not nearly as rounded and based in reality as they are in the final release.

Mama Scarface in this stage of development also possessed black eyes with yellow irises, and her hide had a gray coloration, compared to the final release's brown shading. Unlike the final release, Scarface could actually stand with her head higher than her tail, giving her even more height against adversaries.

However, contrary to her name, Scarface at this point did not have any facial scarring, with the two major screenshots of her only showing her with weapon-based wounds from Mendel-Gruman soldiers. This design would last be seen on October 9, 2006, with the release of the "Carving" trailer.

2008 build[]

Mama Scarface in the final build still appeared as a massive Tyrannosaurus rex. As such, she had a massive skull; short, two fingered arms; and a massive and bulky body. The dinosaur was brown in coloration with a beige color on the lower areas, including the stomach, the bottom of the tail, and the bottom jaw. Changes to her design included added musculature to her neck, which countered her originally-stylized eyebrow ridges and exaggerated jawline, along with her size being shrunken down slightly, compared to the pre-release version of the game.

This dinosaur had a large mangled scar over the right side of her face that obstructed most of her eye and went into the fenestrae. It is unknown what caused this scar.

Juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex[]

Scarface's kin are not seen until "Mother Superior," where they are depicted as crowding around in a pack in their mother's nest. They look very similar to their mother; however, they can come in multiple colors and variants, ranging from brown, to green, to even blue. Their skulls are also less defined.

Turok 2

While most T. rexes in the franchise have been the same general species, Turok 2 was going to incorporate variants based on their environment.

Jungle Tyrannosaurus rex[]

The jungle T. rex variant would have appeared in the jungles of Turok 2. This T. rex was a reddish-orange color with a ridge of large and sharp spines going down its spinal ridge, akin to the Spinosaurus. However, said spines only went down the neck, rather than the entire spine. A secondary variant exists that features a more traditional aesthetic, lacking the spine that is distinctly seen in another concept piece.

Desert Tyrannosaurus rex[]

The desert T. rex was a variant of dinosaur that is found in the desert. The T. rex would have hard stone-like scales on its body. This T. rex's design seems to have been altered in development, as the trailer shows the T. rex with a skull that is elongated, much like a real-world Tyrannosaurus. However, later concept art, renders, and concept animations show the creature possessing a stubbier face and smaller, sharper teeth, which have also grown in number compared to the earlier design, where there were fewer, but larger, teeth, much like in real-life.

Swamp Tyrannosaurus rex[]

The swamp T. rex would have appeared in the swamps of Turok 2. It is the third and last variant that would have been seen. It is large, very bulky and muscular, and it, like the jungle T. rex, had a ridge of spines going down its spinal area.

This T. rex's spines were more toned down and rounded compared to the jungle variant; however, unlike the others, the row of spines went all the way down its back instead of ending at the neck. Its skin is a green-ish color with some areas being tinted a black color.

This variant's concept art suggests its size to be larger than Mama Scarface or the other Turok 2 variants, as it easily dwarfs Turok in size.

Gameplay[]

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter[]

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter had a solitary, massive, green T. rex by the name of Thunder. This Tyrannosaurus acts as a boss battle and features multiple attacks, such as a laser eye and flame breath, which is forcefully ejected out of its mouth.

Turok: Evolution[]

The first T. rex is encountered in the middle of the third chapter, during "Summit Battle." Unlike Thunder, this T. rex is feral and is seen devouring a Brachiosaurus. In terms of health, it is relatively weak, acting as more of a mini-boss. Two or three grenades will take it down.

The second T. rex is under the command of Tobias Bruckner. It is armed with miniguns and flamethrowers, which can cause the player severe physical harm. It acts as a proper boss battle, and as such has immense health.

In the Game Boy Advance version of Turok: Evolution, there is a tan, tiger-striped T. rex encountered twice, once in the canyon and the other in the last level once the Lord Tyrannus hologram is defeated. This T. rex has a cannon on its back manned by Bruckner, the latter of which will stop at nothing to prevent Tal'Set and Djunn from progressing further.

Turok[]

The T. rex of Turok can appear as both a boss battle, and as a rogue NPC during certain levels. The instances of her acting as a simple NPC occur during the events of "The Lost Land," and "End of the Road". She acts as a formal boss during "Mother Superior" and "An Eye for an Eye."

In "The Lost Land," she will act in a scripted manner and eat the remaining MG soldiers that Turok and Slade face. She makes no attempt to attack the two and leaves shortly after. During the events of "End of the Road," she will roam around a small area freely, eating MG soldiers while Whiskey Company watches on. After a short amount of time, she will leave, allowing safe passage into the base's exterior levels.

"Mother Superior" and "An Eye for an Eye" have the T. rex acting as a proper boss, with Turok encountering her in a large, open arena. In the former level, Turok is mainly forced to engage the dinosaur while hiding under a large, hollowed out tree, with the Tyrannosaurus pushing her head through crevices in the dead tree in an attempt to get him. In the latter level, Turok is forced to engage Mama Scarface on open ground, using large shipping crates and wreckage to evade the dinosaur, while trying to find weapons to deal with her.

The juvenile T. rexes act much akin to Utahraptors, being quick and agile, while crowding Turok in a group. Like their mother, they are susceptible to flares and are more vulnerable to explosives.

History[]

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter[]

Tal'Set would encounter the Campaigner's personal Tyrannosaurus upon venturing deep into his fortress. Armed with an enormous arsenal from his travels, a prolonged battle wound ensue, with Tal'Set managing to bring Thunder down.

Turok: Evolution[]

While on their way to a large, ancient temple, Tal'Set and Genn would fly over a pair of Tyrannosauruses which were following, and presumably hunting, a pack of Uintatherium.

Following this, and after convening with Tarkeen, Tal'Set would venture into a mountain range in an attempt to locate a Sleg fortress hidden nearby. The warrior would inadvertently trail behind a Tyrannosaurus, hearing the sounds of its distant roars, before subsequently finding a smaller Brachiosaurus that had fallen prey to it. Pushing further, he would finally encounter the dinosaur eating another Brachiosaurus at the summits and would engage and kill it after a brief skirmish.

After defending the city of Galyanna from an immense Sleg fleet, Tal'Set would attempt to hunt down Tobias Bruckner in a nearby, boxed-in canyon. Eventually, Bruckner would come to him, riding an enormous, armed, and armored Tyrannosaurus. With the rest of Tal'Set's allies falling victim to the creature, Bruckner and Tal'Set would engage in an intense and isolated fight, with the T. rex eventually falling as its own armor and armaments detonated, grievously wounding and crippling both itself and Bruckner.

Turok[]

Upon landing on the terraformed planet, Joseph Turok and Slade would encounter the region's dominant Tyrannosaurus, which arrived and rapidly killed off a squad of Mendel-Gruman Corporation soldiers they were fighting.

This T. rex would later arrive during the search for a communications unit, ambushing and grabbing Gonzales before subsequently taking him to her nest. While unable to find him, Turok did encounter the dinosaur and her kin, and while he would succeed in slaying her offspring in droves, he would be unable to succeed in killing the T. rex, with the dinosaur knocking him out of her nest.

Later, the Tyrannosaurus would be encountered outside a titanic Mendel-Gruman complex during a volcanic eruption. Throwing the attacking MG soldiers into disarray, Whiskey Company was able to use her as a distraction to enter the base, with the T. rex simply leaving afterwards, though she would remain in the region.

After Turok managed to slay his former mentor, Roland Kane, in an intense knife duel, the Tyrannosaurus would return, having heard the commotion. Turok would manage to engage and evade her, with the dinosaur collapsing onto her side after taking an enormous amount of damage. Using a grenade, Turok climbed onto her head and embedded the explosive into her wounded eye, with the device detonating moments later, instantly blowing the giant dinosaur's skull to pieces, killing her instantly.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (2014 comic)[]

The Crusaders refer to the Tyrannosaurus as a "Dragon," and, later, the Tyrannosaurus appears bound in chains aboard the Crusader's ship.

The Crusaders release the Tyrannosaurus with the intention of having it kill Turok, Andar, and the tribe. The dinosaur very nearly devours Turok and Marion before they are saved by Turok's tamed Red Drake. Turok then rides the smaller theropod and leads the T. rex back to the Crusader's camp.

Subsequently, the Tyrannosaurus destroys the Crusader's beach camp and chases the surviving crusaders through the forest and up to the caves in which Andar, Marion, and the tribe are hiding. The carnivore then waits outside of the caves, trapping the Crusaders and natives inside together. Marion's father attempts to appease the beast by feeding it a dog, but Turok arrives and saves the animal.

After killing him in a sword duel, Turok feeds the body of Marion's father to the Tyrannosaur, but it is not enough to satisfy the beast. Turok then tempts the animal into chasing him. He leads it to the beach, wherein he commandeers a rowboat to lead the animal into the water. Here the Tyrannosaurus is killed and devoured by a trio of Thalattoarchon.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, the T. rex appears with three fingers in several issues. This is most likely due to artistic license.
