"Since time began, Turok has maintained the balance between good and evil with the Light Burden. A vessel that holds the power of creation. Now, fierce wars are fought for control. You must prove yourself worthy to wield the Light Burden. You must relive the challenge of your ancestors and survive The RAGE WARS..."
—Box description

Turok: Rage Wars, originally titled Turok: Bloodlust,[2] is a first-person shooter Turok video game released for the Nintendo 64. The game was released at a time when other first-person shooters had multiplayer-based titles released as well (namely, Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament).

The game supports up to four players, or bots (AI-controlled enemies or allies) can be included instead of players (up to a maximum of four players). A one-player, mission-based or combat-based mode is also available.

Like its predecessor, the game allowed use of the RAM Expansion Pak with the Nintendo 64 version but did not require it.

Modes

  • Single-Player Trials Mode - This mode begins with Joshua Fireseed, Adon, and the Bio Bot Elite as the only playable characters. Through single player mode, the player can unlock other characters. In the Single-Player Campaign, the player must go through a number of death matches through the various game mode types and must face all four game bosses as well. Each character in the game must be played to the end of their campaign at least once to unlock other characters and rewards, including Talismans and an increase in maximum health.
  • Two-Player Trials Mode - Similar to the Single-Player Campaign except two players work together through various game types to gain rewards. Some rewards can only be gained in the Two-Player Campaign. (Note: The Two-Player trials mode was affected by a glitch in black cartridge copies of the Nintendo 64 game, which prevented progression past a certain point.)
  • Multiplayer - In this mode the player can choose their character and choose what level to play. The player can choose their weapons and configure their own options for gameplay. (Frag Limits, Time Limits, Bots, etc.) The player starts with Joshua Fireseed, Adon, Bio Bot Elite, and Mantid Drone as the first playable characters. More characters can be unlocked by playing through Single-Player Trials.

Game types

  • Bloodlust - Standard free-for-all deathmatch that can house two to four players.
  • Team Bloodlust - Players and bots can team up with one another in a deathmatch. Up to four teams can be made, although these teams would contain only one player.
  • Capture the Flag - At any given time there is only one flag per map. The object of this game is to find the flag and bring it back to the base, scoring a point. At this point, another flag appears in a randomly generated part of the map.
  • Frag Tag - Similar to Seeds of Evil, in this game a random player is transformed into a monkey. Points are scored for other players by fragging the monkey. It is possible for a player to temporarily turn the other players into monkeys if they are the original.

Weapons and pick-ups

Main article: Turok: Rage Wars Arsenal.

Turok: Rage Wars features a unique way of handling the weapons a player can use. In addition to weapon pick-ups scattered around the arenas, players can first customize their own arsenal before starting a match.

The Custom Arsenal includes:

  • One Melee weapon
  • Two Bullet weapons
  • One Explosive weapon
  • Two Energy weapons

All weapons feature a secondary function activated with the B button. During Single Player Trials, a new player has to unlock these secondary functions for use during the rest of the Trials.

Collectibles

Spirit Key Talismans

Spirit Key Talismans are unlocked after completing a level in Trials mode successfully. Talismans are used to permanently upgrade a character during its trial. The upgrades do not carry over to other game modes.

  • Eagle Talisman - "The Eagle Spirit" - Eagle Talismans act as the games' lives. If the player acquires three Eagle Talismans their lives for all levels in that character's trial are permanently increased to three. When all Eagle Talismans are exhausted the game is over.
  • Bear Talisman - "The Power of the Bear" - The Bear Talisman allows the player's character to carry more explosive ammo. Each Talisman will permanently increase the allowance by five up to a total of 20 rounds.
  • Coyote Talisman - "The Song of the Coyote" - The Coyote Talisman allows the player's character to carry more bullet ammo. Each Talisman will permanently increase the allowance by 50 rounds up to a total of 200 rounds.
  • Cougar Talisman - "The Strength of the Cougar" - The Cougar Talisman allows the player's character to carry more energy ammo. Each Talisman will permanently increase the allowance by 50 rounds up to a total of 200 rounds.
  • Snake Talisman - "The Venom of the Snake" - The Snake Talisman permanently increases the player's character maximum health. Each Snake Talisman will upgrade health by five. There is no limit to how many the player can get.

Minigame icons

Minigame icons unlock the extra modes Time Trial (18 icons) and Frag Fest (36 icons). Minigame icons can be acquired in Single-Player Trials; they are awarded when certain levels are beaten with certain characters.

Medals

Main article: Medals.

There are 50 medals in the game that can be earned. These are needed to unlock some cheats and character skins. Medal rewards range from defeating bosses to medals awarded for suicides. On the Nintendo 64 version, one of the medals is impossible to achieve in early (black-cartridge) copies of the game due to a Two-Player Trials glitch in the "Creature Tag" levels.

Game Boy Color

Main article: Turok: Rage Wars (GBC).

Bit Managers released a Game Boy Color port of Turok: Rage Wars. The game has nothing to do with the console title. The gameplay style is the same as the previous Game Boy ports and has a storyline different from the console release.

Trivia

  • Turok: Rage Wars was the first Turok video game to use the Acclaim Studios Austin logo instead of the Iguana Entertainment logo and the first Turok game not to use the Acclaim Entertainment logo. There is no plotline to the game; however, some of the bios give background information about their respective characters both before and after the events of Seeds of Evil.
