[edit] Introduction
The Mantids Queen is similar to the Mantis of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and is the boss of Level 5 in the game Turok 2: Seeds of Evil.
She is a big alien insectoid with two bigger legs, two claw-like legs, four claws in the chest region and two small arms with laser weapons attached to them. She has a abdomen smiliar in the look like the ones from ants.
She lives deep beneath the Mantid's Hive inside a large cocoon-type chamber defended and housed by Mites, larger than the ones outside the chamber.
It is unknown, which task the Mantids Queen has in the Mantids Colony. Since the fictional race of the Mantids is based on insects, it is possible to speculate. The Queen is cabable of shooting laser-beams out of her arms and can throw napalm bombs at you. This could be a hint on a fighting proposal, giving her the title "queen" for her superiority to other Mantids when it comes to pure battle strength. However, insect queens normally have the task to bear new insects. This could be also the reason, why Turok has to kill all the embryos, provoding the Mantids to die out slowly, because of the lack of brood.
[edit] Battle Tactics
The Mantids Queen can be very hard to defeat. This is due to the extreme difficult to hit her weak parts. Beetween each battle phase a fix number of Mites have to be shot. These Mites are especially big and can easily catch Turok up, when he tries to escape from them, by jump attack him. When you fight against them, it is not much easier to collect ammo and health in the arena than while battling the Queen. Retrospective there is no concrete breathing time in the fight against the Queen. The Mites can endure much damage until they die. Weapons with a bigger explosion width works well against them, dealing damage to multiple mites with one shot. Apart from that it is important to keep your ammo for the fights against the Queen herself. Which weapons do best against her are listed below.
[edit] Phase 1
Before you can take on the Queen, you have to fight three Mites first. After that she shows up again in about the middle of the arena. You have no breathtime beetween the battles against the Mites and the ones against the Queen, so don't get hit by surpise, when the Queen shows up, right after the Mites are defeated. Her first weak parts are the four smaller claws at her chest. In this phase she has two kinds of attacks: the first one is a shooting of plasma spheres with her smaller claws. They are hard to avoid; they even seem to follow you up to a certain degree. Her second attack is a melee attack, but this one is very rare, even if you stand right in front of her. Try keeping a certain distance, because her range attack is much easier to avoid while being far away.
Although she is very hard to be hit, this phase is the easiest one. One Grenade or a Shredder hit (even non explosive) is enough to end this phase. When you use the Grenate Launcher it can be profitable to shoot at the floor, to let a bounced back grenate hit, because hitting the foot regions is most times enought, because of the big explosion range.
[edit] Phase 2
She also sends out Mites before this phase, but this time four. After they are killed, the more difficult second phase will begin. Her weak part is her abdomen this time. She uses the same attacks as in phase one, but addionally she jumps from time to time, which makes her more difficult to be hit and has a new attack: napalm bombs. When she uses this attack she first gets herself into the position shown on the right. After that, Green liquid-like blobs will be thrown out and explode, when they either touch you, or the floor. Interesting is, that she is immune to all attacks at about the first half of this action. Nevertheless this is the best time to shot at her. When she doesn't use this attack you have to try walking around her, or to shoot through her legs at the abdomen, which can be quite difficult.
The Shredder or the Firestorm Cannon are useful, but a secret tip is the Flamethrower. The Flamethrower's ammo runs out very fast, but it is possibly to end this round within only a couple of seconds with it. It is also a bit easier to hit her abdomen with the Flamethrower, because you can shoot above her head and still hit the abdomen.
[edit] Phase 3
After four other Mites the final Part begins. Her weak points are the attached blasters. They are exremely hard to hit and the Queen uses very strong laser atacks. Try to avoid them by using the pillars as cover. Use the same weapons as in the first phases: The Shredder and the Firestorm Cannon do good damage and have a good chanche to hit. The Granate Launcher isn't as effective as the two mentioned before, but does good damage, too, when you manage it to hit her. The Flamethrower has also an outstanding effective in this phase. If you have ammo left for it (you can also put the flamethrower aside from phase 2, so you can use it for phase 3) you can end this phase also quite fast. But this time it is much more difficult to hit her, even with the Flamethrower. It would be a shame to waste such effective ammo in this way.
After her arms are destroyed she is squirming helplessly on the floor, waiting for you to shoot her head. However some weapons can have no effect when hitting.
[edit] Trivia
- Although her appereance is based on insects and ants there is a logic fault: The Queen has both, an abdomen and a human-like belly. The abdomen of insects replaces the belly, so there is no need for both of them. This must have been on the purpose of character style, making her look more agressive due to the exo skeleton of her chest, which reminds of a human six pack and her bigger appearance while walking upstanding.
- She shares her boss fight music together with the final boss of the game, the Primagen.
- Her number of legs is eight, normal insects have six. Additionally she has two arms and two big claws as part of her mouthparts. This gives her a total number of twelve limbs.
- Although she can shoot plasma-like spheres with her smaller claws, the laser beams from her bigger arms come from attached weapons. Same is for the Drones and Soldiers: they have also attached weapons at their arms. That speaks for the outstanding intelligence of the Mantids; they extend their capabilities and bypass evolution, by improving their bodies with technology.
- After the third phase of battle, when you have to shoot at her head, while she is helpless, she is somehow immune to the Grenade Launcher, or at least most hits will have no effect. This counts for some other weapons as well.
- The Battle against The Queen seems anyhow to be a buggy one. Her abdomen is partly immune to weapons during her napalm attack and the Mites sometimes seem to ignore even strong weapons such as the Granate Launcher.
