Overview

High Priests are powerful shamans that appear in Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. They act as the governing body of the Ancient Warriors.

Appearance[]

High Priests are men of great stature that are adorned with skeletal war paint and wear wrist and shin guards made of bone. They wear a type of headdress that is decorated with three yellow feathers, and they have ornamental necklaces that appear to be made of either wood or bone. Their weapon is a spiked, skull-topped scepter from which they fire most of their spells.

Even though the Ancient Warriors first appear in Level 3: "The Ancient City", the High Priests first appear in Level 4: "The Ruins".

Gameplay[]

High Priests are lethal enemies and masters of the arcane arts. When fighting a High Priest, the player must be careful as they have the ability to teleport and may flank the player. While they may use a melee attack with their mace, High Priests will usually choose to stay at a distance and assault the player with powerful magic.

Their main attack is a flaming skull that they will shoot out of their maces. This attack works much like a fireball and can cause splash damage if the player is too close. The other magic attack at the High Priests' disposal is a blast of electricity magic that can home in on the player. Each of these attacks can be avoided by dodging or by hiding behind level geometry.

With the Hardcore difficulty mode introduced in Night Dive Studios' HD remaster, the High Priests have become a force to be reckoned with. They are more ruthless, firing multiple fireballs in a short amount of time, and their homing spell is faster and harder to avoid. Priests also have the ability to use their teleportation spells more frequently. The strategies listed above are still of use when dealing with the High Priests, but greater caution is advised.

The Auto Shotgun can be useful against a High Priest, but the Pulse Rifle or more powerful weapons, like the Grenade Launcher, are recommended. High Priests are usually accompanied by Ancient Warriors. When found stationary, the player can easily kill them with one shot using normal arrows, which can be accomplished by drawing the arrow, waiting for the tip to shine, and releasing immediately. The player should be mindful that a stationary High Priest on the Hardcore difficulty can spam their projectile attack like crazy.
