Overview

The Water Beast, also known as The Beast, or the Sea Serpent, was a gigantic, eel-like creature encountered deep beneath the planet's surface during the events of Turok. Growing to a size that dwarfs even Mama Scarface and the Giganotosaurus, the Water Beast was only encountered by Joseph Turok and Slade, who inadvertently came across the beast's lair while attempting to make their way to the surface.

Appearance[]

This creature is only partially shown. The creature has an eel-like body with octopus-like tentacles and a Dunkleosteus-like head, with lime green, glowing eyes. The front portion of the creature's body that's usually above the water's surface is well over 60 feet long. It has four tentacles that are even longer than that portion and is able to use them to reach Turok from a very far distance, as well as grab the stalactites on the ceiling of the area. On its tentacles, there are suction cups meant for gripping things.

Gameplay[]

This creature is encountered as a boss battle deep in the caves in "Down and Out." It will attempt to hit the player with a variety of means, including its tentacles, throwing rocks at the player, and even lunging in and biting the player.

The creature deals a large amount of damage that will kill in only a few hits. The beast, however, is stationary, so standing a certain distance away will result in it not being able to reach the player.

In order for the player to kill this beast, they must shoot the geothermic gas vents as the Water Beast tries to lunge in and attack the player. The resulting explosion will damage the Beast, and it will recoil. The Beast will show increasingly severe blood loss as the fight goes on.

During the times in between lunges, the Beast will utilize a few different attacks to combat the player. One involves a tentacle swipe across the arena. This attack will be a nuisance to the player, rather than a life or death struggle, as it is highly avoidable. The second attack is a subtle rock throw. The Beast will tear rocks out of the ground from under itself and toss them at the player. This is relatively ineffective, as it strikes a certain range alone, and can easily be avoided. The last is an attack involving the Beast ripping stalactites from the ceiling and throwing them at the player. This is highly deadly and will be the cause of the player's death most of the time, especially on Inhuman difficulty.

Once it dies, it will collapse on the rock bridge and act as a makeshift bridge for the player and Slade to cross.

History[]

Turok[]

Following their inadvertent excursion into the planet's deeper caverns, Turok and Slade were split apart. Although Turok would find Slade shortly after, the latter would be visibly terrified as the massive, eel-like monster erupted from the cavern's river. Managing to use a trio of nearby gas vents against the creature, Turok was able to ward off, and eventually kill, the Water Beast. Its enormous body fell onto the shore nearby, letting the two escape the caverns.

Trivia[]

Production notes[]

  • During the development of Turok, the beast underwent various aesthetic changes. Concept art envisioned it looking more akin to a Plesiosaurus, with rows of jagged teeth and enormous, squid-like eyes. Later concept art of the creature changed its aesthetic notably, giving it tentacles, a dorsal set of spines, and fins on the sides of its skull. A more final piece of concept art shows the Water Beast with a look more akin to what would be seen in the final game, although this version would not have the beak-like mouth. Instead, it had massive, needle-like teeth.
    • At some point during the game's development, the creature was supposed to be encountered by Joseph Turok and Lil. It is unknown if Slade was a part of this encounter at that time.
  • Within Turok's files is an unused map file labelled "LV_15_WB." If the player were to access the map, they would find an earlier variant of the Water Beast's model in a cave similar to the one seen in the retail release. This unused, early model features an altered dorsal ridge and is enormous in length, towering over the final rendition of the creature.
