—The Campaigner[4]

He planned to use the power of the Chronoscepter to rule the universe, but he was ultimately defeated by the Turok Tal'Set.

Earlier in his life, the Campaigner was less machine than man. He attempted to wrest control of the Light Burden from Tal'Set and nearly succeeded. However, a final and decisive blow crushed the Campaigner's body. His injuries were so severe that his recovery necessitated the use of synthetic organs, and his limbs needed to be replaced by cybernetic prosthetics.[2]

Some time later, the Campaigner learned of the Chronoscepter, an ancient artifact capable of rending the fabric of time and space. He constructed a massive focusing array at the summit of his fortress that would amplify the Chronoscepter's power, allowing him to punch through the barriers that separate the Lost Land from the rest of the universe. Unfortunately, the Chronoscepter had been broken into eight pieces thousands of years ago in an attempt to prevent its falling into the hands of evil. Learning of his plan to rule the universe, Tal'Set vowed to track down the pieces of the Chronoscepter before the Campaigner could locate them.[5]

The Campaigner mobilized a massive army in an effort to stop the Turok. Not only were cyborgs, raptors, and humans of various types under his dominion, but he also recruited specific groups; the Ancient Warriors,[6] Pur-Lin,[7] and Alien Infantry[8] all submitted to his rule. The Lost Land was his.[2]

However, it was not to be. Tal'Set ventured to the far distant corners of the Lost Land and acquired all eight pieces of the Chronoscepter. Fighting his way through the Campaigner's fortress, he killed the Campaigner's Tyrannosaurus rex, Thunder, before battling the tyrant himself. After a dramatic battle, the Campaigner was finally destroyed once and for all, his body's cybernetic parts giving out as his fortress crumbled around him.[1]

This Campaigner, a robot[3] known as The Hollow One, presided over an arena in the Lost Land of Galyanna. He believed that the line of Campaigners and the Turok lineage were two sides of the same coin, respecting the fact that both were soulless fighting machines in his eyes. While he understood that the Turoks could best him in physical combat, he deemed it impossible that they could outsmart him.[9]

During Tal'Set's tenure as Turok, the Campaigner captured the residents of multiple villages, holding them hostage as prizes for the challenge he gave to Tal'Set. The game: outsmart him and he would let the villagers free, but fail, and they would be killed. Tal'Set seeks the aid of Joshua Fireseed, the Turok of 1997, to help him with this challenge. Joshua, having only been Turok for a few months, worried that he was too inexperienced to be of any assistance, but he stepped up to the plate regardless. Joshua gave the Campaigner a problem based off of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" routine: "Here's the starting line-up. Who's on first. What's on second. I Don't Know's on third. Tomorrow is pitching. Today is catching. What's the name of the player at second base?" The Campaigner, confused, answered incorrectly, losing the challenge. The villagers were freed, and Tal'Set returned them to their homes.[9]

An unspecified amount of time later, Tal'Set and the Campaigner fought to the death. The Campaigner, having acquired the Chronoscepter, refused to relinquish it. Tal'Set removed the robot's arm with an atomic ax, and the resulting explosion destroyed his flesh-like exterior. To finish him off, Tal'Set picked up the dropped Chronoscepter and unleashed its energies, obliterating the Campaigner on both an atomic and a temporal level. It was as if the Campaigner had never existed.[3]

Gameplay

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter

The Campaigner, despite utilizing his army to do the fighting for most of the game, is a skilled and agile fighter. He can prove to be quite the battle for beginners and relies mostly on strong, explosive attacks. The boss is armed with a bladed club and a shield at first, with which he will charge the player and strike them, if close enough. If the player is too far away to be hit with the club, the Campaigner casts large, blue energy blasts.

The player must be constantly moving. Remaining stationary will only put themselves in danger, as the Campaigner takes any opportunity to strike.

When the player first transports to the fortress rooftop, they are immediately greeted by the Campaigner, who lets out a cry of laughter. He will then immediately charge the player. If the player is not careful, they will instantly be struck by the cyborg's club. If the player was able to assemble the Chronoscepter, the start of the battle represents a good opportunity to blast the Campaigner with it. Make sure to back off a few steps, however, otherwise the backwash from the explosion will likely kill Tal'Set as well.

If the player happens to charge the cyborg in an attempt to attack, the Campaigner will quickly evade and backflip a sizable distance from the player. The player can manage to hit the Campaigner from a distance with explosives or the Minigun. Tek arrows work just as well as any explosive, too; the player will just have to maintain a safe distance from the boss. Eventually, this will cause his shield to break, and he will only have his club. He will still have his ranged attacks, though.

Despite every weapon in the game being given in the corridor leading up to the battle, the player should resist the temptation to use the Quad Rocket Launcher, Particle Accelerator, or Fusion Cannon on the Campaigner. Doing so will not only cause the Campaigner to remove the weapon from the player's arsenal, but cause him to unleash his most powerful attack, which can knock off over half the player's health in one go.

Once the Campaigner has taken enough damage, he will retreat to a higher floor, where he will proceed to bombard the player with energy projectiles; these cause a lot of damage and must be avoided. He will occasionally release a rain of small explosives upon the player, which can be evaded with enough distance.

Turok: Rage Wars

Using the Campaigner in single-player mode to beat the levels "Wicked Dance" and "Crossroads" unlocks the Emaciator and the secondary function of the Tek Crossbow, respectively. Beating the entirety of the Campaigner's single-player trial unlocks the Fireborn as a playable character.

Trivia

  • The Campaigner is voiced by David Dienstbier in both Dinosaur Hunter[10] and Rage Wars.[11]
  • The Campaigner uses the same design of the Campaigner from Valiant Comics' Turok: Dinosaur Hunter comic series, which was designed by Tim Truman.[12]
  • The Campaigner is one of the few final bosses in the original Turok series to be of human scale and not a large creature.
